The Little Gnome- A Healing Story for Children during Covid-19 Home-stay

The Little Gnome

Once there was a little gnome who was quite busy going to his school and busy at his tree-home helping his mumma. He was also quite busy with his friends playing in the forest everyday.

But one day this little gnome woke up, he looked around and became quite confused. He couldn’t go to gnome school anymore, his friends couldn’t visit him and he couldn’t play with his friends in the forest either. Little gnome was stuck in his tree-root home. Why did he have to stay home? Didn’t everyone know how little gnomes love to roam!

Some days passed and his gnome friends began to visit the forest with their mumma and papa gnomes once again. Each had their chosen play tree. He felt quite happy in his heart, at least he could come out of his play tree, climb up from the tree- roots to the top of the big rocks and wave at them with glee but still from afar.

Now the little gnome felt quite at peace and began to find joy in playing in the forest near his tree-home while watching his gnome friends. As he played by himself, everyday brought a new surprise to him, things he had never seen before! He saw that the Little ants were scurrying by, brightly coloured beetles were climbing up and down the fallen leaves, floppy eared rabbits were hopping in and out their burrows and he saw delicious mushrooms, big and small, growing deep in the forest too.

But even with all these things to watch, little gnome was growing impatient. Why couldn’t he go hug his gnome friends and play with them together? It didn’t make sense to him why he could not roam.

Then Mother Tree whispered to him: ‘Things are not as they used to be - but trust me -soon you will be free - trust me, trust me.’ Little gnome knew in his heart that he could always trust Mother Tree. Mother tree was as wise as wise could be. Mother Tree carried the wisdom of the whole forest! Mother Tree knew all about everything. The birds and the wind were her friends and messengers. They visited her every day sharing the news of the big wide world. Little gnome could hear when the birds came by. He could hear them singing high up in the branches of Mother Tree. Little gnome could see when the wind was visiting. He could see the branches swaying this way and that. He sometimes had to close his window to keep out the leaves and dust stirred up by this busy friend!

Everyday Mother Tree continued to whisper to him: ‘Things are not as they used to be - but trust me -soon you will be free - trust me, trust me.’ So little gnome had to trust, and little gnome had to wait. Soon he knew he would be free again to leave his home and visit the gnome school and soon he knew he would be free to roam once again in the beautiful forest with his dear friends too.

How to narrate this story:

Stories awaken the life giving & transformative energies that help our children (& us too) through our difficulties. Through stories we come to realize that the emotions we feel- the sorrow & joy, cowardice & courage, the awe & wonder- are not unique to us but part of the universal experience of being human. Stories give the young ones, a feeling that they are not alone.

The parent could read this story for themselves a few times. When you feel ready and are able to find a connect with the story, you could narrate the story from the pdf e-book or even through your memory to your child. As it is a special story, you could narrate it 3-4 days in repetition at an important ritualistic parent-child time like bedtime or 'story time'.

In case you would like to narrate the story by looking at it, reading through a print out would be suggested.

Wishing you best & your family more strength.
