How do I get my Child to experience 5 Elements of Nature?

Do you know that our children (& adult) body requires not just food to blossom but they need to experience all 5 elements of nature, to be truly healthy?

Fire, Earth, Air, Water & Space (Ether) together forms building blocks of life and are the true source of illness free human body. On World Environment Day, let’s understand what does this vast yet generous nature around us provides and why we need to protect it even more than ever.

Ayurveda says that food only makes up to 15 % of our bodily ‘nutrition’ requirement when we look at it truly in a holistic manner. Remaining 85% comes from- Air(6%), Water(2%), Fire(4%) & Ether(remaining%) elements.

How can I bring my child to experience these elements in nature?

Earth: You can start by reflecting about the quality & quantity of food that your child consumes. Is your child eating rhythmically during the day i.e. at set timings or is s/he engaging with it very often?

Playing in parks & being close to the soil and ground can nourish this element in our bodies further.

Walking bare-foot and being surrounded with and experiencing fellow animals & birds around us is another wonderful way to enhance our experience of Earth element.

Air: The quality of air we breathe, gives strength to our respiratory and wonderful rhythmic system. Where are my child and I receiving clean air from, nature or air purifiers?

When the child’s body and family life is stress-free, the breathing and the rhythmic system of their body stay balanced.

Strong daily rhythms of sleep, food and excretion enhances rhythmic system further.

Water: Quality of water with trace elements present in them. Are my child and I drinking it slowly and while sitting down or mostly in hurry? Is my child drinking enough water in a day? Also remember that we experience this element through consuming fruits and vegetables. Ideally it is the clean water in motion, which carries highest quality of nourishment.

Fire: The biggest warmth-giving element in the universe, The Sun. We need 20 mins. of its exposure daily. Children and elderly need even more!

The lovely massages, hugs and even the warmth in parent’s inner gestures, voice and gaze, brings the child closer to experiencing this element. This element also ensures good health and functioning of our metabolic system.

Ether/Space: Ether is ~ ‘The essence of emptiness’.

It requires us to ‘fill’ the emptiness in our lives. Our lives become full not by being busy, but by being nourished physically and emotionally. Physically it is the warm, moist, food that I provide to my child that brings ‘fullness’ in their stomach. Emotionally, love is the highest form of nourishment that we can provide to our children.

Let’s find our ways to engage with all the five elements of nature and reflect how we can receive these elements within ourselves in the healthiest manner. Let’s find our ways to engage with these elements pro actively and preserve and nurture them for ourselves, our children and for generations to come.
